With the novel "The Unicorn" - the second part of the Anselm Kristlein trilogy, which concludes with "The Fall" - Walser has written a love story and simultaneously its origin story. Anselm Kristlein, the representative and salesman of "Halftime," has become a writer. He receives the assignment to write a book about love. He makes himself the hero of the novel. The literary recollection becomes a journey into reality: activities, places, and people from his past resurface. Above all, women distract him from himself, making his expectations, the unicorn, overwhelming. The documentation of his romantic encounters serves as exercises in depicting the experience that cannot be told, the encounter with Orli. Far from her, at home in bed, Anselm examines his memories, scrutinizing what remains of that time.
