While deviance as a historical phenomenon has been well researched, only a few studies have so far focused on clergy who did not want or could not adhere to the norms of priestly life. This volume illustrates, through selected cases from the 18th century, how deviance emerged, what forms it took, and how the authorities of the Diocese of Bamberg dealt with it. The contributions discuss, among other things, the clerical prison in Schlüsselau, as well as priests who participated in magical treasure hunts, committed treason, or maintained sexual relationships. Additionally, ten love letters from a chaplain have been edited. Thus, the volume emphasizes the complexity of clerical nonconformity. It includes contributions from Alissa L'Abbé, André Arnold, Mark Häberlein, Katharina Kempski, Oliver Kruk, Miriam Mulzer, and Michaela Schmölz-Häberlein.
