A dead Jewish banker. Why does no one in Hamburg in 1929 find this surprising? Ilka Bischop is an emancipated woman: wealthy, a pilot, a journalist, and recently pregnant - though she isn't quite sure by whom. One day, a tenant in one of her Hamburg properties is murdered. A Jewish banker. An anti-Semitic crime? Ilka investigates and makes a painful discovery: her younger brother Robert has connections to one of the new right-wing parties. It's called the NSDAP, and its leader, named Hitler, is being courted by the wealthy Hanseatic citizens. Ilka no longer recognizes her hometown; she becomes increasingly convinced that the murder was a political crime. And she wonders: what role did her brother play in this? The successful Hamburg series reaches a particularly thrilling historical phase with the end of the Weimar era.
