North Sea Coast, 1825: On a stormy night, a newborn is abandoned in front of the parsonage. She is baptized with the name Clara and placed in the care of a teacher couple. It soon becomes apparent that the foundling absorbs knowledge like a sponge, but she is also highly willful and defiant. All attempts to raise Clara to be a compliant girl fail. She is and remains the "wild girl." When she has to support herself at the age of fifteen, she takes a position as a milkmaid on one of the large marsh farms. But secretly, she dreams of more: training to become a midwife. This is practically impossible for someone like her. Yet Clara perseveres...
