This book provides a compact yet comprehensible overview of the methodology and evaluation of various school performance studies, along with an extended discussion of the concept of competence. In Germany, national and international school performance studies have been conducted regularly for several years, including the PISA study. Many of these studies use the Rasch model to explain the results obtained. But what is the Rasch model, and why can it be used to measure student competencies based on specific tests? After a fundamental and prerequisite-free introduction to the Rasch model, the book explores this question and explains, in connection with current studies in German schools, the basic principles as well as the limitations of the Rasch model.
