The use of firearms by police officers likely represents the most serious intervention measure that an officer can take. For this reason, they must be thoroughly and optimally prepared to fend off potential dangers to themselves or others and to ensure that bystanders are not put at risk. The study series documented in this volume aims to stimulate the scientific discussion surrounding police firearm use and to help optimize shooting training and overall operational training.

In instances of police firearm use, hit rates are often reported to be significantly lower than shooting performance in training. One of the factors cited that can reduce hit rates in the field is the dynamics of the situation. This means that in police shootouts, the shooter may be moving and shooting at a potentially moving target while in motion. This can be associated with a lower probability of hitting the target or a higher difficulty in making a hit. Furthermore, this type of shooting may be less practiced, as training often predominantly involves static shooting at stationary targets.

Ultimately, the influence of movement—both the movement of the shooter and the movement of the target—on hitting in police firearm use has been scarcely studied. Therefore, the study presented here focuses on the impact of movement on police shooting.
