Product details
Niclaus (Gerhaert) von Leiden is one of the most significant sculptors and carvers of the Late Gothic period. The last monograph was published in 1928. Despite a wealth of individual studies, there is a lack of comprehensive research on the works and their interpretation. This work analyzes the complex iconography of the Strasbourg chancellery busts, St. Adrian, the Baden-Baden crucifix, the Sierck tomb, the Strasbourg canon epitaph, and the Dangolsheim Madonna for the first time in detail regarding their iconographic semantics and discusses them in their historical context of piety. Inherent statements about the works and stylistic criticism are linked with considerations of theme, patrons, and the function of the artwork.
