Power electronics have become indispensable in today's drive technology. In practice, applications with electric speed-variable drives are frequently encountered. Cost-effective semiconductors and microprocessors enable an economical implementation of converter technology in drive systems. Intermediate circuit converters account for a significant portion of the converters used. The author Ingo Schmidt provides an overview of the structure and function of an intermediate circuit converter. The theoretical foundations of an intermediate circuit converter are explained using an experimental setup in the simulation tool Simplorer. Calculation examples describe the design, and practical simulations demonstrate the operation and grid impacts of an intermediate circuit converter. The application possibilities of the intermediate circuit converter are illustrated with practical examples, and its operation is compared with that of the voltage intermediate circuit converter.
