More and more municipalities are pursuing strategically oriented economic development in the form of cluster orientation. A strategic concentration of resources is indispensable in many cases, both in view of dwindling public funds and because of the increasingly international competition among municipalities, which is forcing them to distinguish themselves more clearly from other cities and regions, i.e. to define their profile more clearly. This process leads away from the classical economic development as a policy for the existence of the region to a considered development of individual parts of the economy, which is based on an analysis of the region's own potentials.
