I find walking on the streets of Delhi really difficult. My observations drew my attention to the plight of pedestrians. Further investigations revealed that the number of casualties and morbidity, as well as other details of the streets of Delhi, are quite poor compared to other cities around the world. Every year, over 100,000 people die in traffic accidents in India. Additionally, over 1.5 million are hospitalized, and 7 million suffer minor injuries. The estimated annual loss amounts to 550 billion Rs., which is 3% of the GDP. In Delhi, pedestrians account for 50% of traffic accident victims, compared to 8.5% of the national average. As pedestrians, people face various problems. There is practically no space to walk. The sidewalks are overloaded with various activities. These conditions are highly intolerable and unacceptable. I propose some cost-effective solutions using the existing infrastructure. If implemented, these solutions will help drastically reduce the number of pedestrian fatalities.
