The book explains the largely unknown hereditary metabolic disorder known as Hämopyrrollaktamurie (HPU). It causes a disruption in the body's detoxification processes, leading to significant losses of micronutrients such as vitamin B6, zinc, and manganese, as well as a deficiency of heme, the iron-containing pigment that is part of red blood cells. HPU is often found in women; overall, one in ten women and about one in a hundred men are affected. The spectrum of symptoms and related conditions is wide-ranging, including depressive disorders, exhaustion, low stress tolerance, thyroid disorders, food intolerances, menstrual irregularities, and joint diseases. Due to this diverse range of symptoms, HPU often goes undetected. Affected patients frequently endure a long journey of suffering. Only a few experts are currently familiar with this condition. The authors are pioneering work in this field.
