An important area for the goal of sustainable and future-oriented economic activity in the field of 'Construction and Housing' is the previously under-researched area of old building modernization. There are significant potentials here, but also barriers to energy-saving measures. Additionally, considerable amounts of material flows with diverse compositions and sometimes problematic substances are generated during new installations and disposal. The study examined the complex structures, framework conditions, decision-making processes, interconnections of the involved actors, and obstacles to effective material flow management in old building modernization through case studies and numerous discussions with stakeholders in the construction sector, as well as a workshop with participants from the rental housing sector. Recommendations were derived from this.
