The turn of the century marks the heyday of Polish art. This volume showcases masterpieces of painting from this era, which lies between decadence and a spirit of renewal, and illuminates their roots in Polish history, culture, and nature, as well as their close connections to the European art scene. Polish painting around 1900 transports us into a world of myths and legends, dreamlike landscapes, ancient traditions and customs, and the depths of the human soul. In a nation without its own state—Poland was divided among Russia, Prussia, and Austria-Hungary until its independence in 1918—a young generation of artists emerged to renew painting. In doing so, they created a shared identity while also connecting with the European avant-garde.
