The significance of foundations, especially in our times, can be illustrated by the fact that some leading research, various artistic projects, and social enterprises would hardly be able to secure funding without the revenues from various foundations. However, many students, and perhaps even some faculty members, may be unaware that the very existence of Munich's Ludwig Maximilian University is attributed to a foundation. It was the foundation of Duke Ludwig the Rich of Bavaria-Landshut that enabled Bavaria to establish its first university in 1472. This volume sheds light on the importance of foundations in general, examines the specific foundation situation of Ludwig Maximilian University at the end of the late Middle Ages, and subsequently focuses on foundations from the 19th and 20th centuries that were intended to benefit both research and teaching at LMU.
