Gottsched's "Dying Cato," premiered in Leipzig in 1731, is considered the first German original tragedy in the sense of a systematic poetics of the Enlightenment, with far-reaching consequences for the era. At the center of the drama is Cato, the last steadfast Republican against Caesar, who rises to become the sole ruler of Rome. The appendix of the edition includes, in addition to an afterword, excerpts from the contemporary discussion about Gottsched's drama.
