Karl May is not only the most widely read author in the German language, but also the most successful screenwriter in the history of the German film industry, with over 25 film adaptations. Beginning with the first silent film in 1920, his heroes have been appearing again and again on cinema screens for a century now. The well-known films with Pierre Brice and Lex Barker are still the German film series of superlatives. More than 200 photos and illustrations revisit an extraordinary success story with its many facets. Some of the advertising material, documents and filming photos have never been published before and, together with the film images, provide an insight into the (cinematic) world of Karl May.
