How did Critical Psychology come about? During the student revolts and other social movements, such as anti-psychiatry and the women's movement, a radical critique of the ideology and function of psychology emerged in various parts of the world. This culminated in impactful projects of a critically reflective psychology as a science and professional practice, including the Critical Psychology developed at FU Berlin by a group around Klaus Holzkamp. It combines theory critique with the programmatic aim of providing a subject-oriented, emancipatory alternative to the psychological control and legitimization sciences. Canadian psychologist Charles W. Tolman offers a structured introduction to Critical Psychology and takes a critically reflective look at the history and relevance of this scientific development.
