The battle of Stalingrad, now Volgograd, which lasted for more than half a year, is still considered a turning point in the war between Germany and the Soviet Union. The battle began in the autumn of 1942 with the German attack on the Russian city on the Volga and ended in February 1943 with the effective surrender of the German 6th Army. It resulted in around 700,000 deaths, most of them on the Russian side. The Second World War was far from over at that point; nevertheless, this battle remains of central importance in the collective memory of the nations involved. The series "Wars of Modernity," published by the Center for Military History and Social Sciences of the Bundeswehr, presents the most significant military conflicts of the 19th and 20th centuries based on the latest scientific findings and explains their historical causes and political consequences.
