Product details

Filled with hope to build a socialist society, Jewish communists migrated back to the Soviet occupation zone of Germany after World War II. However, their dreams of a better society free from fear, including fear of anti-Semitic policies, soon gave way to the reality of Stalinist persecution. The wave of anti-Semitically tinted suspicions against alleged informers, "cosmopolitans," and "diversionists" reached its peak in the GDR in the early 1950s. Many Jews, who hardly saw themselves as such, experienced the contradictions of a policy that considered itself antifascist firsthand. This policy was never a mere import from the Soviet Union. Rather, this book understands it from a multidimensional perspective that considers theoretical and ideological concepts not without their historical context, historical events not without their subjective reception, and biographies not without their social contexts.
