Rapidly dissolving tablets are an alternative to conventional dosage forms for patients such as geriatrics, pediatrics, and bedridden patients who have difficulty swallowing traditional dosages. Conventional dosage forms require a glass of water for administration, whereas rapidly dissolving tablets, placed on the tongue, dissolve quickly and only need a small amount of water to facilitate swallowing. Rapidly dissolving tablets combine the advantages of conventional solid and liquid dosage forms. They disintegrate quickly in the mouth without the need for water. Rapidly dissolving tablets demonstrate significantly higher dissolution, absorption, onset of clinical effect, and bioavailability of the drug compared to conventional tablets. In the formulation of rapidly dissolving tablets using direct compression techniques, superdisintegrants or highly water-soluble excipients are incorporated into the formulation. Superdisintegrants play a crucial role in the formulation of rapidly dissolving tablets. Therefore, starch glutamate, a novel modified starch, can be used as a superdisintegrant in rapidly dissolving tablets.
