Stadt und Erinnerungskultur

In Germany, a variety of museums, archives, and memorials commemorate history. The most common themes are the crimes of the Nazi regime, World War II, and the division of Germany, as well as its overcoming. These institutions, which are so important for democracy and democratic education, are supported by municipalities, states, or the federal government. However, their roots often lie in civic engagement. The essays in this volume present individual memorial sites and provide insights into their history, development, educational and curatorial concepts, as well as their reception. Additionally, selected personalities and events are discussed in relation to the history of democracy as part of the culture of remembrance in Germany.
