Ángel Santiesteban, born in 1966 in Havana, is the literary conscience of Cuba. For years, he was the celebrated author of his generation and received all the major literary awards in the country. After he began writing a regime-critical blog, he was repeatedly threatened and ultimately sentenced to prison. In 2015, he was released under international pressure. In July 2021, he participated in protests against government policies and has been under surveillance since then. Santiesteban's texts have not been published in Cuba for many years. His highly acclaimed short story collection "Wolves in the Night" (2017) was recently published in German. In 2020, he was awarded the prestigious "Disturbing the Peace Award" by the Václav Havel Library Foundation.
