Synopsis:
The prosecutor of a small town in the Nile Delta is roused from his sleep one night: A fellah has been murdered, the jealously guardian of the beautiful Rim, it later turns out. With his whole entourage of administrators and gendarmes, he goes to the scene of the crime. On the way, they pick up the vagabond Sheikh Usfur, an enigmatic existence who takes a passionate interest in all justice cases. His mystical intuition senses clues even where circumstantial evidence is no longer visible. But the criminal case remains unsolved; it is only the occasion, the framework for this social novel that has become a classic.

Taufiq al-Hakim, born in Alexandria around 1898, died in Cairo in 1987. He is considered one of the most important authors and innovators of Arabic literature.
Since 1939, in addition to his literary work, he was also active in education and culture, including as director of the Egyptian National Library and as Egypt's representative to UNESCO.
