Diesel's second volume, dedicated to the vibrations of systems with multiple degrees of freedom, known as "coupled vibrations," completes the second edition of the work. It has taken a long time to arrive. An explanatory note seems appropriate. If one takes the term "vibration theory" in its broadest sense, it encompasses not only mechanical but also electrical and other physical processes; it also includes large technical fields such as machine dynamics, vehicle dynamics, flight mechanics, and almost the entire field of control engineering. At times, I was tempted to write a vibration theory in this broader sense. However, the boundlessness of such an undertaking became clearer year by year. The volume I now present returns to the principles I outlined in the preface to the first volume.
