Product details

The present yearbook reflects on 25 years of urban renewal, takes stock, and presents future perspectives. In the year of German reunification, a group of professionals came together with the Working Group on Urban Renewal at German-speaking universities, aiming to contribute to the institutionalization of the professional debate on urban renewal through the publication of a yearbook. They referred to a field of urban development that, although no longer young, had only recently been consolidated as a guiding principle. The emergence of cautious urban renewal had largely established an approach in the old Federal Republic after lengthy discussions in the 1980s, which particularly respects both the urban-architectural substance and the existing uses and residents. This approach represents a significant expression of a shift in urban planning, where the rational planning model has been replaced or at least supplemented by a more communicative one, the paternalistic model of planning has been strongly questioned, and the urban-architectural ideals of modernity have been replaced by principles of post-modernity.
