In the numerical treatment of partial differential equations, surprising phenomena often arise. In addition to a swift exploration of classical theory that leads up to current research, great emphasis is placed on presenting examples and counterexamples. These examples have contributed to the book becoming a standard work in finite element methods. With the fifth edition, there has been further refinement of topics that have gained importance in recent years. The theory of a posteriori error estimators provides a priori information about the discretization error, which has not yet been derived in classical theory and highlights a characteristic of a posteriori estimators more sharply than before. The treatment of plates in solid mechanics now receives a solid foundation with the two-energy principle.
