People with speech apraxia have problems planning speech movements and the speed and melody of speech. They pronounce sounds imprecisely because they find it difficult to select the correct movements of the articulatory organs for speaking in a targeted manner. In addition, people with speech apraxia often speak slowly and in syllables. Their speech melody often seems monotonous. The listener finds it difficult to understand what is being said or has the impression that the wrong sounds have been uttered. In addition to communication difficulties, speech apraxia can also have extensive psychosocial consequences, such as loss of employment and social isolation. Speech apraxia is often the result of a stroke.
