Summary:
When asked by a women's magazine in 1928 which reading had influenced him the most, Thomas Mann replied: Andersen's fairy tales. Michael Maar traces the footprints of these early impressions in Thomas Mann's work and discovers hundreds of previously silent details, whose symbolic power only becomes apparent in the light of the fairy tales. "A philological thriller. Aside from its stylistic qualities, I was astonished by the optical illusion effect. How is it that no one has discovered H.C. Andersen's White Queen in the tangle of branches?

About the Author:
Michael Maar, born in 1960 in Stuttgart, studied German philology and psychology in Bamberg. He is a member of the German Academy for Language and Poetry and lives as a writer and literary critic in Berlin.
