This book provides an analysis of the politics of consumption and demonstrates how the 'educated consumer' plays a crucial role in promoting responsible market practices and consumption. Based on a comprehensive interdisciplinary perspective, it examines the extent, drivers, and connections of boycotting, purchase boycotts, labeling systems, and corporate social responsibility (CSR) across 20 European countries. A central question is whether macro-societal orientation patterns regarding the roles of the state, companies, and citizens can explain individual and cross-country differences in boycotting and purchasing bans. As the book shows, there is not just one type of 'political consumer,' but several, and their emergence is directly related to national variations in labeling systems and corporate social responsibility. Consumers need guidance and information about the political backgrounds of their purchases, and policymakers must address this need through political measures that align with national patterns in views on cooperation and market relationships.
