Abstract: This work highlights the special significance of the Isenheim Altarpiece for the history of images and art for later generations. It takes into account that artists of the 20th century, such as Pablo Picasso, engaged with Matthias Grünewald's Isenheim Altarpiece for an extended period while working on "Guernica." The enormous complexity and size of the work, as well as the vast amount of literature, necessitate a focus on a specific aspect of the altarpiece, here the depiction of the Crucifixion. Initially, a brief overview of the few aspects is provided.
