Biogas is produced in varying amounts, depending on the substrates used during fermentation. The gas consumption in a combined heat and power plant is continuous. External influences such as pressure and temperature must be compensated for, and operational reliability must be ensured. For these reasons, storage is necessary. What requirements a storage system must meet is not easy to answer at first glance. The distinction between biogas plants, as well as their affiliation with the relevant technical guidelines and the requirements for the associated storage systems, is diverse. Gas storage must be gas-tight, resistant to media, UV radiation, temperature, weather, and pressure. Generally, gas storage is classified based on its appearance and operating pressure. The range of storage systems varies from nearly pressureless systems to high-pressure steel storage. This work aims to differentiate storage systems based on their design and concept. An overview of common storage types and a matrix of their properties will provide insight into the market.
