Networks permeate nearly every area of society today, and for a long time, the mantra was: the more connected, the better! However, this enthusiasm for connectivity has somewhat faded. The constant availability comes at a cost, open-office architectures are increasingly under criticism, and new security risks are causing unrest. Based on such crisis diagnoses, Urs Stäheli reflects in this book on the limits of connectivity in three ways - as a critique of relational social theories, as a cultural sociological analysis of figures of disconnection, and as a genealogically oriented investigation of practices of disconnection in various fields.
