Product details
How can regions be made sustainable? This volume deals with this question.
Sustainability is an overarching goal of politics and should also be the yardstick for a modern social market economy. Sustainable development must be environmentally sustainable, it must be economically sustainable and it must be socially sustainable. Already in the UN's Agenda 21 of 1992, special importance was attached to the region in the realisation of sustainability goals: 'Since so many of the problems and solutions addressed in Agenda 21 have their roots in activities at the local level, the participation and involvement of local communities is a crucial factor in achieving the Agenda goals'.
In the contributions to this volume, sustainability is examined from a regional perspective. This ranges from the description of regionally different living conditions to the analysis of the development of regional training and labour markets to the possibilities of stronger digital regional participation.
The volume emerged from a conference on social sustainability in the region in November 2019. The conference was held in cooperation with the Aktionsgemeinschaft Soziale Marktwirtschaft e.V., the Gesellschaft fü,r Sozialen Fortschritt e.V. and the Evangelische Hochschule Darmstadt.
