Sound Design

The volume 'Sound Design' addresses the topic of sound and noise in film from a music and media studies perspective, focusing on the interfaces and overlaps of the sound layers. It centers on the narrative and aesthetic possibilities of controlling, intertwining, and blurring the boundaries between noise, music, and language in film. Just as art music sought a liaison with its seemingly opposite counterpart—the non-musical noise—sounds have newly intertwined with dialogues and music as the other two layers of the soundtrack. Through examples such as sound in silent film, musicalized noise in animated film, the intersection of music and sound, and meta-storytelling through sound, the four contributions in this volume explore where film music begins and sound design ends.
