Carl Spitzweg and His Time "He will be a pharmacist," the father decides at the birth of Carl Spitzweg in 1808. And Carl complies, even though as a child he paints on every piece of paper he can find. Later, he becomes an apprentice to the pharmacist Pettenkofer and studies natural sciences. However, he secretly paints the people around him on the side. It is only when he meets Clara, the great love of his life, that Spitzweg manages to live his dream of painting. His happiness shatters when his beloved wife dies. Carl Spitzweg retreats into his painting, learns from recognized artists, copies works in the Old Pinakothek, and travels to see paintings. He paints to survive. He becomes a productive, obsessive painter, a portraitist of the beautiful little world, and a painting chronicler of the 19th century.
