Young Lizzie has left her rural home to begin her training as a cook in the bustling London of the 1960s. She is determined to enjoy her newfound freedom, even though she knows her mother is already searching for suitable marriage candidates and making plans for Lizzie's wedding. Soon, Lizzie sports a fashionable short haircut and has moved into a magnificent, albeit rundown, house in the stylish Belgravia with her friends Alexandra and Meg. Her mother's plans are completely forgotten as Lizzie can only think about the handsome Hugo, whom she has fallen in love with, being engaged to someone else.
