"What do you understand by software engineering?" If you ask this question to ten different people, you will surely get as many different answers. The reason for this is that neither a uniform terminology nor a generally accepted set of basic knowledge has been developed in this relatively young discipline. The gap between research and practice is also problematic, as it virtually blocks any further development of software engineering. This leads to the fact that in many places in software development today the use of methods that date back to the 1970s is only just beginning, and that ffir modem software and hardware environments are completely inad aquat. The present book would like to make a contribution to overcoming this gap. It deals with the methodological foundations of current software development.
