"The Individual" is at the center of Søren Kierkegaard's (1813-1855) thinking. Exposed to a tormenting, unhappy life, he experiments with different attitudes in the virtuoso play of pseudonyms and outlines the aesthetic, ethical, and religious forms of existence. Fear and despair are the abysses of human life: "not wanting to be oneself and yet at the same time desperately wanting to be oneself." The modernity of the Danish philosopher lies in his emphasis on subjectivity, which can only be lived and asserted against the general. In this context, the permanent crisis of the self is irreducible, and despair is an integral part of being human.
