Egon Erwin Kisch visited the Zurich prison, Hans-Rudolf Hilty the Kloten airport, and Franz Kafka the Bahnhofstrasse. Hugo Ball's Flammetti fishes early in the morning at the meat hall, Hugo Loetscher's wreath maker celebrates All Saints' Day sales at Döltschihof, and Klaus Mann's famous family populates Zurich in his emigrant novel The Volcano. Zurich as a setting for literature, literary texts about Zurich: famous and forgotten, brilliant and curious from all times, excerpts from novels, stories, memoirs, poems... From Oskar Panizza to Max Frisch, from Maria Waser to Nelly Sachs, Goethe, Tom Stoppard, Robert Walser, Richard Wagner... all have immortalized Zurich in literature. The concretely emerging places between fiction and reality are richly illustrated with many never-before-published contemporary images, and image captions tell their stories.
