Silver Lake Drive

Alex Prager (born 1979) is a Californian and one of the most innovative and original photographers and filmmakers of her generation. She stages scenarios with professional actors, friends, or family members in hyper-realistic settings that feel familiar yet are simultaneously unsettling, often eerie and disturbing. It is no coincidence that Prager's series bear a distant resemblance to Cindy Sherman's film stills: the rich legacy of Hollywood is as unmistakably present in her images, which tell stories without a beginning or end, as is the influence of American street photography and pop culture—only in her work, black and white is replaced by the vivid colors of advertising aesthetics. Silver Lake Drive is the first monographic retrospective of Alex Prager's photographic and cinematic work to date, featuring more than 120 color plates.
