Sigfried Giedion: Befreites Wohnen

Sigfried Giedion's short yet compelling manifesto "Space, Time and Architecture" (1929) is an early expression of the ideas behind modernist living. As such, it serves as a key to a deeper understanding of the core issues addressed at the International Congresses of Modern Architecture and the discussion surrounding the industrialization of production processes and their impact on public housing at the beginning of the 20th century. Giedion's manifesto, written by one of the leading advocates of modern architecture, draws its argumentative strength from vivid comparisons and is the only book that the art historian authored and designed himself. This fall, a facsimile edition of "Space, Time and Architecture" will be published for the first time, featuring detailed notes and a scholarly essay by Reto Geiser, which places the work in the context of its time and explains its relevance to the reader.
