Now in its third edition, the second volume of Pit Schubert's classic "Safety and Risk in Rock and Ice" is available. Reading the first volume has certainly helped many climbers avoid fatal mistakes that others have often paid for with their health or even their lives. The fact that "Safety and Risk I" (awarded the so-called "Alpine Oscar," the Dietmar Eybl Prize for Safety in the Mountains, in 1995) is now in its seventh edition and has been translated into several languages demonstrates the significant gaps in information and knowledge that Pit Schubert is able to fill, as does the publication of a third volume "Safety and Risk III" in 2006. The scope of the first volume was limited for various reasons. As a result, some topics, such as "via ferratas" and "sinkholes, a treacherous danger," are covered in detail only in this current volume.
