Product details

Fault tolerance and security vulnerabilities are interconnected in the increasingly popular mobile computing systems. Checkpoint-recovery algorithms that provide fault tolerance have been developed to address mobility, handoff, resource constraints, and security vulnerabilities in mobile cellular and mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs). Checkpointing algorithms that utilize cryptography have been proposed to counter both active and passive attacks in mobile cellular networks. To reduce the encryption-decryption overhead in MANETs without fixed infrastructure, a trust-based checkpoint recovery has been suggested to ensure that only trusted nodes can participate in the process. Two trust models have been proposed. In one trust model, the trustworthiness of nodes is assessed based on recommendations from other nodes, failure rates, availability or lifetime of a node in the network, and remaining battery power. The other is a trust model based on ant colony optimization to ensure that checkpoints during recovery are only traversed by trusted mobile nodes.
