Sharing time

The era of the Helvetic Republic was long considered the neglected stepchild of Swiss historiography. This changed with the anniversary year of 1998. Now, this period is recognized as a project of modernity and an important phase of political development. The realization of legal equality and personal freedom for all Swiss citizens, as well as the abolition of serfdom, are significant achievements of the Helvetic Republic. The technical, organizational, and economic policy innovations are also increasingly acknowledged: the transition to the mechanization of spinning, the removal of trade barriers, and the establishment of trade and industry freedom. Economic modernization, liberalization, and deregulation are terms that also shape current political discussions. Their social consequences and deficiencies are becoming increasingly noticeable.
