Shame

Accompanying volume to the exhibition of the same name in the Deutsches Hygiene-Museum Dresden from 26 November 2016 to 5 June 2017. shamelessness is a sign of our time, while the sense of shame is rather attributable to past centuries and other cultures - or so it seems. Yet shame is the social affect par excellence: it is the relationship between the individual and society, between perceived belonging and experienced exclusion. To the same extent that the capacity for shame is basically inherent in human beings, its respective manifestations can only be understood as culture-dependent. Shame - so the thesis - never loses its meaning, but only changes its manifestations. Based on the themes of the exhibition, ten renowned authors will address the various facets of the feeling of shame. In their essays they open up meaning.
