Product details
This book discusses in an easily understandable way the origin, development, course and possible effects of SGA (Small for Gestational Age), including treatment options. The latest research results impressively demonstrate that in SGA children, a temporary nutrient deficiency via epigenetic processes leads to a reprogramming of the metabolism already in the mother's abdomen. The fetus reacts to the deficiency, slows down growth and reduces muscle and fat mass. It also adjusts the regulation of insulin and adrenal cortex hormones. Without therapy, SGA children later have an increased risk of being too small or of developing obesity, type 2 diabetes or high blood pressure. In the case of small children, the main focus is on questions of growth progression. Here the book gives clear pointers on how to manage growth.
