Anne Frank's diary, first published in the Netherlands on April 27, 1947, is one of the most important texts of the 20th century: it symbolizes the genocide of the Jews by Nazi criminals and documents the life of a uniquely gifted young writer. While the Frank family hides in the annex, thirteen-year-old Anne confides her feelings and thoughts to her diary, describing daily life in hiding and the overwhelming fear of discovery. The diary ends on August 1, 1944. Anne's father, Otto Frank, is the only resident of the annex to survive. After the war, he receives his daughter's diaries and publishes excerpts from them for the first time in 1947. To this day, Anne Frank's world-famous diary has been translated into over 70 languages.
