Thomas Mann himself described 'Death in Venice' as a novella with a daring, if not impossible, subject, referring to the sudden onset of passion in a person's life. The not-so-young writer Gustav Aschenbach - bearing the features of Gustav Mahler - discovers the figure of the beautiful boy Tadzio at the sultry Lido of Venice, yearns for him in his thoughts, and becomes consumed by an unfulfilled love, of which he ultimately becomes a victim.
