For more than two decades, Tunisia has focused on rational energy use and the expansion of renewable energy sources. Ambitious energy demand management programs have reduced the growth rate of energy consumption and significantly lowered energy intensity. Thanks to these programs, Tunisia today consumes 20% less energy than in 2000 to produce the same level of prosperity. Despite efforts in energy management, the Tunisian energy mix remains heavily dependent on fossil fuels. Alongside biomass, petroleum products and natural gas cover nearly all energy needs across all sectors. This publication describes, on one hand, the development of the Tunisian energy system and the challenges it will face in the coming decades, and on the other hand, the key results achieved through bilateral cooperation projects with the European Union.
