Traffic-related air quality issues have recently become a topic of debate due to the diesel driving bans confirmed by the Federal Administrative Court and the uncovering of emissions manipulation in vehicles. This work fundamentally examines the legal background. It focuses on the instrument of air quality management, its application by the judiciary, and its limitations. Additionally, the work systematically prepares the regulatory framework of emission standards for motor vehicles, taking into account the type approval process. The initially isolated legal areas are then analyzed to determine whether a legal interaction arises from their factual connection, which follows from environmental protection, and can be operationalized within the framework of legal application. Finally, legal and policy solutions are developed to better represent the interconnection of objectives legally.
